Technnique
There is no hard and fast rule for black and white (charcoal) vs grey tones (graphite). It depends on what suits your tastes.
Charcoal
Charcoal portraits are similar to black and white photos, however there is not the huge variation in grey tones. Charcoal is a fragile material that reates rough textures on the paper
Graphite
This medium gives you a great variation of grey tones. It is a hard material which means that your portrait will have more details but less dark shades.
